About

Entfremdung is the working name of Joseph Asher Hale, though many of the projects here have been produced in conjunction with others who are credited when this is the case.  The term is German for "alienation" and used by Karl Marx to describe the laborer's relationship to her/his product in the newly-industrialized world of 19th century Europe.  On this website, Entfremdung is meant to be a catch-all idea for the kind of art-like projects you will find on this site, many of which utilize the trash, DIY culture, technology etc. that are part of everyday American experience.
